5–10 minute brain breaks that reset energy with little or no stuff. Each game below includes Setup, Play, and a quick Variation.

Games

1) Would You Rather?

  • Setup: None.
  • Play: Read a silly choice (“Would you rather fly or be invisible?”). Everyone answers in 1 sentence. Do 6–10 prompts.
  • Variation: Add movement—stand left for option A, right for B.

2) 20 Questions

  • Setup: One player thinks of a person/place/thing.
  • Play: Others ask yes/no questions to guess in ≤20.
  • Variation: Pick a category (animals / objects) to make it easier.

3) Categories (A–Z)

  • Setup: Choose a category (foods, animals, countries).
  • Play: Go around naming items A→Z. Skip a letter if stuck.
  • Variation: 2-minute timer—how far through the alphabet can you get?

4) Alphabet Hunt

  • Setup: None (optional: write A–Z on paper).
  • Play: Find something in the room (or in your mind) starting with each letter.
  • Variation: Photo hunt—take one picture of 5 letters.

5) Simon Says (Movement)

  • Setup: None.
  • Play: Leader gives commands; only obey if “Simon says.”
  • Variation: Add PE moves (wall push-ups, squats, lunges).

6) Story Relay

  • Setup: Pick a prompt: “A package arrived with no return address…”
  • Play: Each person adds one sentence; 6–8 turns total.
  • Variation: Set a timer: each turn = 10 seconds.

7) Word Ladder (paper/pencil optional)

  • Setup: Start with a 3–4 letter word (e.g., COLD).
  • Play: Change one letter each turn to make a new word (COLD→CALD→BALD→BAND…).
  • Variation: Cooperative—how many steps can you make in 2 minutes?

8) Sparkle (Spelling)

  • Setup: Choose a word list (grade-level).
  • Play: Spell around the circle, one letter per player. The player after the last letter says “Sparkle.” Keep tone kind.
  • Variation: Small circle (3–4 players) for gentler practice.

9) Mental Math “24”

  • Setup: Say four numbers (e.g., 4, 6, 6, 2).
  • Play: Make 24 using + − × ÷ (use each number once). Share solutions.
  • Variation: Pick an easier target (12) or harder (36).

10) Clap Patterns

  • Setup: None.
  • Play: Leader claps a pattern; everyone repeats. Each round add 1 beat.
  • Variation: Switch leaders; try stomp/clap/snaps.

11) Paper Toss

  • Setup: Crumple paper, pick a bin, mark 3 throw lines.
  • Play: 3 shots per player; closest line = 1 point, farthest = 3.
